These should not be confused with standard passenger car and light truck parts for the same retaining applications that also have a P suffix. These high-performance parts have unique part numbers different from the standard parts for the same application. P-Series parts are the oldest series of Clevite high-performance bearings. The rod bearings in this series typically have the greatest amount of eccentricity. Most rod bearings are available with or without dowel holes for use on aluminum rods. Most P-series main assemblies are fully grooved to maximize oil flow to the rod bearings. Both the rods and the net have high flatness for maximum retention and reduced overlap thickness to prevent overlap fatigue, sometimes called chicken tracking. The rod bearings utilize a hardened steel back for added strength and fret resistance. Extra-clear rod bearings are available for an additional 0.001" of clearance and selected fit. Use P-series rods where extremely high RPMs cause severe rod bore close-up. This is typically indicated by the almost complete parting line at the shaft contact of the parting line with bearings that have less eccentricity. Use P-series nets where higher eccentricity is desired for tight contact patterns and to provide greater lubrication to the alrededorings. Rod bearing oil starvation is typically indicated by polishing and staining of the bearing surface, possibly accompanied by discoloration concentrated predominantly on the axis.
